KEDFAS!

Kingsbridge Estuary Decorative and Fine Arts Society (KEDFAS) is a Society whose members are neither experts nor artists but ordinary people who are interested in improving  their knowledge of the “Decorative & Fine Arts” in the widest sense.

KEDFAS was established in 1993. One of the aims of the Society is to encourage the growth of friendship, but most of all we meet to combine learning with enjoyment.

Because of the number of members, the Society is divided in its meetings into two sections. One session meeting in the evening of the last Wednesday in the month and the other the following morning (Thursday).

The Wednesday evening session meets at 7.15 for 8.00pm at Kingsbridge Community College, Balkwill Road. The Thursday morning session meets at the Reel Cinema, Fore Street, Kingsbridge at 9.45 for 10.30am.

Membership of KEDFAS is open to all. There is no need for any sponsorship, nomination or other means of supporting a candidate's membership.  It is important to know that membership is NOT restricted to residents of Kingsbridge or immediate environs. There are quite a number of members who live in Salcombe, Modbury, Stokenham, East Allington, to name but a few..  The time it takes to get to the lectures is the main factor that determines whether joining this society is a viable proposition!

Members are entitled to attend the lecture programme, automatically becoming members of NADFAS and receiving the sumptuously produced Quarterly Arts Journal  NADFAS REVIEW.

The annual programme year, from September to June (but excluding December) consists of nine monthly meetings of illustrated lectures by nationally acclaimed experts in the fields of silver, ceramics, furniture, clocks

paintings, sculpture, stained glass, landscaped gardens and country houses, etc drawn from organisations such as The V&A, The British Museum, The Tate Galleries, etc, even the Antiques Roadshow!  The programme is selected by the Society's Committee and aims to offer something for all. Each meeting lasts approximately one to one and a half hours. In addition to the nine lectures, the Society conducts  Study Days, usually a full-day series of lectures on a particular topic with opportunity for a hands-on approach to original material eg metalwork and ceramics.

There are Day Visits to art collections, historic venues, important houses and/or gardens in the South West.
The Society also arranges one Tour a year, in the U.K or further afield. This involves an overnight stay of one or more nights.

What is Church Recording?  It is making records of the contents of churches which are a catalogue of secular and ecclesiastical art - memorials, metalwork, woodwork, windows, etc. NADFAS members have recorded over 1000 churches but numerous churches in England, Scotland and Wales still need to be recorded.

To date, Salcombe, South Pool and Thurlestone Parish Churches have been the subject of this in-depth recording process carried out by teams of KEDFAS  church recorders.

Finally we arrange occasional events of a cultural and social nature, including an annual  lunch at Christmas when members from both sessions can meet  together.
